Protecting My Family, My Integrity, and the Movement: The Truth Behind the Attacks

4 min readFeb 1, 2025

“Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment.”

— Proverbs 12:19

As Chairwoman of the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, I won’t allow misinformation to overshadow the truth or distract from the important work I’ve dedicated my life to.

It is heartbreaking that, with all the issues facing our community right now, this is what some choose to focus on. Families are struggling, mental health crises are on the rise, and economic disparities persist. These are the issues that deserve our attention and unity.

False claims from an individual with a history of lawsuits, as well as documented stalking and harassment, are attempts to mislead the public and undermine my integrity.

Here are the facts:

  • My family home, where I raised my children, was purchased years before I joined the Board.
  • Attacks escalated when someone claiming to advocate for Black people, invaded my family’s privacy by showing up to my home uninvited — traumatizing my child. This was not just an invasion but an attempt to intimidate me. No one, especially an innocent young Black person, should endure such harassment.
  • Similarly, my personal car was purchased long before my role with the organization.
  • The organization’s finances are fully transparent and available through public IRS 990 filings, which clearly demonstrate where the BLM Global Network Foundation’s resources are allocated— furthering our commitment transparency and financial stewardship.
  • I come to this role with decades of experience as a businesswoman and advocate.

My company, established in 2016, has served respected organizations such as the African American Policy Forum, NAACP Legal Defense Fund, National CARES Mentoring Movement and WACO Theater Center.

My financial stability was built through hard work long before my involvement with BLM. I have served in nonprofits for over 20 years, and on three other nonprofit boards, always guided by integrity. My work with BLM continues that legacy.

Fundraising events and galas are for building resources to uplift Black communities — not for personal extravagance. Leadership requires showing up with excellence, and I take that responsibility seriously.

Martha’s Vineyard has long been a place of both work and restoration for Black leaders. For over a decade, my family has used our time there for meaningful work, reflection, and community building. Rest and strategy are essential components of sustained activism.

I prioritize Black joy and wellness because love fuels my work. Love is at the center of everything I do — love for my people, love for my community, love for this movement. Caring for myself allows me to continue advocating for others. That means continuing to take vacations whenever I am able — because I work hard, I pay for them with resources I worked for and earned through my business, and I believe in creating space for joy, peace, and wellness.

This also includes a renewed commitment to maintaining my health and well-being through intentional weight loss and self-discipline. Wellness is essential for leadership, and joy is not a privilege — it’s a necessity. It’s disheartening that, with all the challenges our community faces, some choose to focus on baseless accusations about my appearance.

In the face of these false accusations, I am deeply grateful for the many people who have stood by me — those who know my work, my character, and my unwavering commitment to Black communities. Leaders, colleagues, and community members who have worked alongside me for years continue to speak the truth because they have seen firsthand the impact of my dedication. My clients trust my expertise and leadership. My professional track record speaks for itself, and the people who truly understand this work know that these baseless attacks are nothing more than a distraction from the real issues. I am not alone in this fight — there is a community of people who recognize integrity, stand for truth, and refuse to let lies overshadow the work that truly matters.

Despite these distractions, I remain steadfast in my commitment to transparency, accountability, and creating lasting impact through education, arts, and economic empowerment, While others spread lies, I will continue to focus on creating lasting impact — because love, joy, and service will always prevail over hate, distraction, and division.
